Absen Shining Brightly at Mauritius Ocean Games

Four Absen LED displays were used at the Côte D'Or national sports complex which had played the host to the 2019 Indian Ocean Island Games, creating wow factors during the Olympic event in Mauritius.

The 2019 Indian Ocean Island Games, officially known as Jeux des îles de l'océan Indien Maurice 2019 or simply JIOI Maurice 2019, is the 10th edition of this multi-sport event for athletes representing the National Olympic Committees of Indian Ocean island nations. It was held in Mauritius from July 19 – 28, 2019, with the attendance of over 2000 athletes from Comoros, Madagascar, Maldives, Mayotte, Reunion, Seychelles and Mauritius.

In the context of the Indian Ocean Islands Games 2019 (IOIG) and in line with Government’s vision of developing Mauritius as a sports destination, a state-of-the-art sports complex comprising an aquatic centre, a multi-purpose gym, a football stadium as well as an athletic track, is being set up in Cote D’Or, with an investment of Rs 732 million (20,254,000 $).

According to Mr. Eddy Boissézon, the Acting Minister of Youth and Sports, Minister of Civil Service and Administrative Reform, Mauritius was set to be entrusted the organization of the 11th edition of the IOIG following the decision of the International Games Committee to withdraw the organization of the 10th edition from the Federal Republic of Comoros.  Despite the time constraint, Government showed determination to come up with the necessary sport infrastructure for the organization of this event of magnitude, he stated.

As part of the necessary sports infrastructure, four Absen LED displays with a total area of 123.5 sqm were installed in the gymnasium, the aquatic center and on the exterior wall of the gymnasium.

The gymnasium could accommodate 2,000 spectators and hosted the judo competition during the 2019 Indian Ocean Island Games. The 37.5 sqm Absen PL lite screen was deployed in a 7.5m wide by 5m high configuration. The display offered a 4.8mm pixel pitch, 4000 nits of brightness and 140° of horizontal viewing angle as well as real-time monitoring from PC, tablets and smart phones, giving the user complete control locally and remotely. With a panel thickness of 87 mm, the Absen PL lite is thin and light, saving on installation space, and making delivery and installation convenient.

With its seating capacity of 1,100 and an Olympic swimming pool, the aquatic center was the venue for the swimming events. A 37 sqm LED display screen, next to the swimming pool and opposite to the auditorium, was used to offer live match feeds, scores display, commercial advertising opportunities and an overall better experience for visitors to this swimming center. Boasting a 6.6 mm pixel pitch, 7500 nits of brightness and a 160° horizontal viewing angle, the XD6 plus showed an excellent visual performance to the audience, even in the direct sunlight during the competition.

Other two Absen XD6 series were mounted on the exterior wall of the gymnasium, securing a functional and decorative part of the video system of the whole stadium. At the opening day of the first Indian Ocean Islands Game (IOIG) competitions, Prime Minister of Mauritius - Pravind Jugnauth attended. Before a crowd of 2,000 people consisting of ministers, government MPs, mayors and councillors, foreign diplomats, sports people and supporters, Jugnauth expressed his “happiness to see this project completed in such a short time [construction works started in October last year] despite its magnitude [the complex is set over 65 acres]”. For Jugnauth, this sports complex is a “feat” and “the first gold medal of Mauritius” even before the start of the IOIGs “for its quality and beauty”.

Absen’s engineer Carvin Yu, who had given on-site support to the whole project, also attracted the attention of the People of Mauritius on the inauguration day.

Besides the four LED displays installed, there are still 200 sqm to be installed in this whole project of the construction of the stadium.
